Exhibit Commons
Exhibit Commons is a breakthrough in how people engage with the modern science center, giving everyone a chance to play the role of curator.
Based on the concept of community-developed information resources such as Wikipedia, Exhibit Commons gives you the chance to affect and change the content of actual exhibits at Liberty Science Center. We let you present your perspective and exercise your creativity by using digital files, videography, photography and other materials to explore and innovate.
We have several open-source exhibits designed to encourage people of all ages and technical abilities to contribute to the overall museum experience. Some are technologically simple, such as recording video testimonials. Others will be challenging, such as reprogramming digital "spray cans" for the graffiti wall in our Communication gallery. All guest submissions must meet Science Center-established criteria for accuracy, suitability and general interest.
Open-Source Exhibits
RACE: YouTube™ Video Contest
For a limited time only, contribute to the dialogue about race in American by submitting a video for RACE: Are We So Different? This special exhibition is showing now through April 27 at Liberty Science Center.
Communication: Graffiti Expressions
Liberty Science Center lets visitors leave their mark on our 10-foot-long electronic graffiti wall. But you can make an even bigger mark by changing the way our digital "paint" works. We give you our code. You provide the creativity.
Communication: Make Contact
Long before humans could write or use language, they stenciled their handprints onto cave walls. Our visitors can leave their handprint in pixels. Exhibit Commons lets you change how those handprints look and create a new background for our digital cave wall.
Our Hudson Home: Narrators
The Hudson River provides jobs, recreation, drinking water and more for the people of this region – but sometimes it also provides controversy over how to use and care for it. We let you express differing views about the river by creating video dialogues.
The Exhibit Commons concept was born here, but we encourage and welcome participation from other institutions around the globe. Learn more about how other museums and science centers are getting involved.
