Research & Development

School Residency Program

Overview:
Research and Development processes are a very integral part of every industry. There are many stages involved in order to get a safe final product ready for consumer sale. Participants will work their way through the R&D process with the formulation of lipstick.

The process starts with a marketing charter which outlines the specific outcome of the final product. Background information into skin, raw materials, and marketing are examined. Each step in the lipstick formulation process is completed in order to develop the product described in the initial charter. The process steps include: wax phase, powder phase, light and color, colorants, molding, and testing. Testing includes: consumer, safety and stability testing.

To conclude, participants will develop their own product using techniques they have learned following the specific marketing charter for their group. They will develop the colors, a name, and a final marketing scheme for presentation to the group. They will be able to keep their final project.

Big Ideas:
• Research and Development is an integral part of industry. Lots of time goes into the development process and many individuals are involved. The Marketing Charter to final product R&D process can take 18 months.
• The cosmetic formulation process requires an integrated background including knowledge in: chemistry (chemical properties, molecules, and testing techniques), biology (skin layers, secretions, texture, eye perceptions), physics (light, color), industry (government regulations/safety, standards, machinery), and marketing (consumer testing, charters).
