School Residency
It's a science experiment that lasts for days!
Grades: K-12 | Length: 2-5 days | Program Cost: $24.00 per student, per day
Give your students in-depth science knowledge through the School Residency Program. The program transforms the traditional field trip into a focused 2-5 day learning experience centered on your chosen theme. Each school residency supports a standards-based classroom curriculum and multiple learning styles and can be customized to fit your classroom needs.
Our staff conducts a pre-residency lesson at your school to develop a strong rapport with you and your students -- the starting point to an optimal learning experience. We strive to create a partnership with teachers who participate in the residency program by offering them five professional development credit hours.

Residency Thematic Packages for 2008
Note: Themes that do not have a specific grade level listed can be customized for all grades.
Design It! Rubber Band Power Cars (Physics)
Grades: 5-10
Learn about motion and energy by building your very own rubber-band powered car! Start with gravity and continue to test and refine the design to see if your car can travel the fastest and the farthest.
Forensics (Biology, Chemistry)
Grades: 5-12
Crack the case with techniques used by real forensic scientists! Learn how to check for fingerprints and analyze fibers and footprints. Using the techniques they learned, participants become crime scene investigators and solve a crime. See a sample schedule.
Food Science (Chemistry)
Grades: 7-12
Learn the basic chemistry of food: calories and their relation to energy; macronutrients – fats, carbohydrates, proteins – and their uses in the food industry and in our bodies; vitamins and the role they play in our health. Participants use indicators to test for the presence of nutrients in food substances. They’ll apply the concepts they learned to solve a forensic food mystery. See a sample schedule.
Research & Development: Invent It! (Chemistry)
Grades: High school science/AP science
Explore the R&D process in relation to the scientific method, including microscopic analysis of emulsions, color pigments and dyes, and the science behind color. Participants will analyze and test a product they formulated and present their product for marketing. (4-5 day program) See a sample schedule.
Life Science
Explore the ecology of living things, including organisms and their environments, the classification of plants and animals, and adaptations and defense mechanisms. On-site explorations include the use of the exhibition Eat and Be Eaten and/or explorations in Liberty State Park.
Human Body
This residency can cover an assortment of systems/ including muscular, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, skeletal and reproductive.
Physical Science
This residency can cover an assortment of sciences describing the physical world, including; chemistry, energy and motion, the nature of matter, materials science, light, sound and electricity.
Earth Science
Study the earth and its systems. Areas to choose from include astronomy, weather, oceanography and geology.
Art in Science
Using science as a focus, students study organisms while creating an artistic project around the subject. Art-related work includes the use of appropriate tools and materials related to the study subject. (Limited availability)
Careers in Science and Job Shadow
Grades: High school
Consider various science careers and learn from people in the field. Explore what types of work are possible, where jobs are available, the tools needed for specific jobs and the education necessary to get into the field. (Limited availability)
The School Residency Program is made possible by the generous support of the ExxonMobil Foundation. Additional support provided by L'Oréal USA.
