What is Live From... ?

What is Live From... | Cardiac Classroom | Neurosurgery | Kidney Transplant | Robotic Surgery

Operating rooms transform into classrooms through videoconferencing technology that lets students interact with surgical teams in real time, asking questions while procedures take place. During this dialog, hospital staff explains everything from their career choices to the equipment in the room. Meanwhile, a program facilitator demonstrates surgical devices just like those used in the live operation and discusses factors that cause disease-ultimately putting patients on the operating table. This experience is supplemented with a Teacher's Guide aligned to the national, New Jersey and New York curriculum standards for science and workplace readiness.

“Watching a kidney transplant – live – and
having students talk to operating room staff
was an incredibly compelling experience.
Students talked about it for days afterwards
and a significant number now want to
explore careers in medicine or biology.”
-Bobbi Bremmer, High School Science Teacher

Program Partnerships

Launched in collaboration with Atlantic Health System and Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates in 1998, Liberty Science Center's award-winning Live From... Cardiac Classroom paved the way for the Neurosurgery, Kidney Transplant and Robotic Surgery live events now in operation. Today these programs show real-time surgery to thousands of viewers across New Jersey, the United States and in several countries. Partnerships with Atlantic Health System, Saint Barnabas Health Care System and the NJ Sharing Network, plus generous support from Johnson & Johnson, make these fantastic learning experiences possible.
