The O.R. Team

The success of any surgery depends on a team of skilled doctors, nurses and technicians working together in the operating room, also called the "O.R."

Surgeon
Leading the team is the surgeon who directs the operation and is ultimately responsible for all patient care.
Anesthesiologist
Patients stay asleep during surgery thanks to medication administered by the anesthesiologist-who also monitors patients during the operation.
Physicians Assistant
Working under a doctor's supervision, the physicians assistant helps with tasks ranging from preparing the patient to stitching sutures.

Scrub Nurse
Within the sterile field that surrounds the patient, the scrub nurse assists the surgeon and keeps track of all tools used during surgery.

Circulating Nurse
Coordinating with patient floors, contacting the pharmacy and helping the scrub nurse are just some of the tasks assigned to the circulating nurse.
Perfusionist

Heart surgeons operate on nonbeating hearts thanks to the heart-lung machine. The perfusionist is in charge of this mechanical pump.
