Community Science Workshop
Liberty Science Center has partnered with the Newark Public Schools and the Greater Newark Conservancy to offer a unique afterschool program experience for Newark schoolchildren.
The Community Science Workshop (CSW) provides Newark students with a neighborhood-based program that offers hands-on science experiences and actively engages learners of various ages.
What is the Community Science Workshop?
- A safe, open-structured place for students to drop in after school and during the summer to explore and tinker on engaging science and environmental projects;
- An opportunity for children and educators to gain first-hand experience with New Jersey plants and wildlife;
- A showcase for native ecosystems, allowing students to learn appropriate animal husbandry, conservation and horticultural techniques;
- A chance for young people to act as apprentice scientists -- learning to tag animals, and to document and analyze the data from their scientific explorations at the CSW;
- An enhanced science lab for teachers who lack laboratory space, supplies or a comfort level with hands-on science and guided inquiry;
- A place stocked with the tools of science -- microscopes, dissection specimens, research materials, and a suitable environment for investigative learning;
- A resource center for Newark schoolteachers and their classes during the regular school day.
